The reliable tracking of a train is the key information for effective and smooth railway operations. Providing and processing this information is a very complex and elaborated task. Various different systems have to engage and communicate with one another. Rail-bound train detection technologies like modern axle counters or tracking solutions help to minimize this complexity.

Because of their higher availability and their significantly lower maintenance costs they successively replace existing track circuits. Flank protection equipment should prevent a train from being endangered by other vehicles approaching on converging tracks. Flank collisions are possible at track intersections and due to shunting operations. Axle counters can be used for flank protection control, such as flank points, derailers or blocking signals.
