Frauscher has been part of Wabtec Corporation for almost a year now. Since then, the integration process has introduced several learnings, opportunities and changes – but the latter were not only a result of the acquisition. The courage to embrace new ideas, a spirit of innovation, and the ability to recognise possibilities in new technologies have always been part of Frauscher's DNA. Accordingly, the company continuously develops its portfolio of products, solutions, and services within dynamic structures. Mayank Tripathi, Vice President and General Manager of Frauscher Sensor Technology, reflects on past months, teases what will be shown at this year's InnoTrans and gives an outlook.
Mayank's recap on his new role
Taking on this role has brought both personal and professional learnings in equal measure. Michael Thiel led and developed this company for 15 years in a truly impressive way – stepping into that role comes with a strong heritage and a real responsibility. I have genuinely enjoyed that process, and it has shaped me in ways I did not fully anticipate.
At the same time, the whole company entered a new era with the acquisition by Wabtec. Working alongside experts from across the Corporation has taught me a great deal – particularly when it comes to leveraging our global reach and strengthening our position in established and new markets alike.
Frauscher's development as part of Wabtec Corporation
Frauscher has been a global player for decades and we have built a solid foundation to grow stronger over the years. Being part of Wabtec Corporation expands our reach and allows us to operate even more effectively. Together, we are constantly working on integrating Frauscher into these global structures. Throughout that process, we focus on identifying synergies – particularly in areas that will drive our shared future growth. On that basis, I feel we are more than ready to write our company's next chapter as a fully integrated part of Wabtec.
Frauscher's offering as part of Wabtec portfolio
We have become part of Wabtec Digital Intelligence. Our proven wheel sensors and axle counters, innovative object controllers, connectivity and data transmission solutions, as well as our monitoring platform, combined with a wide range of services, are a complementary addition to Wabtec's offering. Together, we are able to provide customers with products, solutions and services that add value at every stage of their projects and installations' lifetime. On a global level, this strengthens our positioning as a dedicated expert in signalling, and as a partner able to provide markets with future-proof solutions for growing demands.
Frauscher's full portfolio
Yes, it will continue – and it will even grow more. Now, together with Wabtec, we have many more opportunities to strengthen our portfolio and to increase our offerings in markets all over the globe. This has always been in our DNA. Driven by innovation, Frauscher was known as a pure axle counting manufacturer for a long time. Now we are developing a full portfolio of Wayside Object Controllers, with first installations already in the field and we look forward to continuing this by developing more products, more solutions and more added value services in future, harnessing new possibilities and making the most use of new strength we are gaining.
Insights into the industry's challenges
For us, challenges have never been obstacles – they are what drive us forward. Our proximity to customers has always been central to how we work: with installations in more than 100 countries and 15 Frauscher locations worldwide, we have built a detailed understanding of the real-life, in-field issues operators face – and how to address them.
EULYNX is a strong example. The initiative represents a major step forward for the industry, but it also introduces genuine complexity for many stakeholders. We embraced it early: Frauscher was one of the first to develop an axle counting system complying with EULYNX Baseline 2.0 – because we see challenges not as constraints, but as an opportunity to lead.
Being part of Wabtec adds a new dimension to this. It opens channels in established markets and new ones, and gives us access to insights we would not otherwise have. Our focus remains unchanged: providing customers with solutions that help them operate their networks as safely and efficiently as possible – with even more to draw on now.
The importance of Cybersecurity and Frauscher's approach
We have been working intensively on our product security for almost ten years and have embedded this into the core of our development philosophy. We have built solid expertise, developed dedicated structures within our organisation and implemented robust tools into our development processes to ensure new solutions are cybersecure by design.
A key part of that approach is the clear separation between the security layer and vital components: security updates can be applied independently, without touching SIL 4-certified logic. That is what allows us to keep security continuously up to date without ever compromising the safety of the system.
Secure network communication was already a priority with FAdC®, which was presented at InnoTrans 2014. We can also ensure that existing products can be embedded in modern infrastructures in a cybersecure manner via extensions that leave the vital system logic untouched – all in line with the European Cyber Resilience Act. We welcome it as another step in the right direction: applying consistent standards across all stakeholders in the railway industry.
Updates in the field of Object Controllers and what will be shown at InnoTrans
We're bringing a wide range of updates, with the Frauscher Advanced Platform FAdP as our main highlight. FAdP is exactly what it stands for: a single, shared foundation for multiple object controllers. What makes it particularly compelling is that around 70% of components are shared across controller types – only 30% are application-specific. EULYNX-compliant and cybersecure by design, it is a platform built to reduce lifecycle costs, integration complexity and cabinet footprint across the network.
FAdP Point is where that concept has moved into proven reality: installations are already operational in the field. At InnoTrans, we will also introduce visitors to FAdP TDS – our forward-looking concept for a fully digital approach to train detection – and FAdP IO, which provides flexible object control for a wide range of data transmission applications, including generic IO and the digitalisation of legacy infrastructure.
The sensor story is equally important. We have recently introduced a new sensing method across the RSR3xx wheel sensor generation, delivering significantly greater immunity to interference and reliable filtering of partial traversing events – across all three models in the family. RSR360 will bring those advances to our proven FAdC® axle counting system. And RSR360 Pro is the sensor we are developing for FAdP TDS: designed to combine power and data communication via ethernet over a single two-wire connection, removing the need for dedicated signalling cable infrastructure and using available network infrastructure instead. At InnoTrans, it will be on display as part of a prototype FAdP TDS setup.
Completing the picture: we will also present the Frauscher Track Vacancy System FTVS – our Basic Integrity axle counting solution, available and field-proven for non-vital applications.
We will continue to strengthen our position as a highly reliable partner in a railway industry facing growing demands – and growing opportunities. Our portfolio continues to develop in line with those demands: each addition is designed to deliver genuine added value for our customers, whether through new products, expanded services or enhanced capabilities.
Initiatives like our new production facility in India will further bolster our supply chain and our capacity to serve global markets. With our Frauscher Academy, we are also addressing the increasing demand for competence management in rail operations.
Combining the strengths we have always had – our innovation drive, our technical depth, our closeness to customers – with what we have gained as part of Wabtec Corporation, I am confident that the best chapters of Frauscher's story are still ahead. That, ultimately, is what it means to be "Your partner for confidence."
