Scope of project
Frauscher Insights Diagnostics

Frauscher has supported the Paddington project with the adoption of Frauscher Insights Diagnostics, a cloud-based monitoring solution that increases data usefulness and availability. By providing faster fault analysis and health messages, Frauscher Insights has helped Network Rail improve reliability, reduce downtime and delay minutes by up to 80%, and shift towards a proactive maintenance approach.

As one of the busiest and most operationally critical rail corridors in the United Kingdom, the Paddington route experienced increasing infrastructure-related issues that were impacting reliability, performance, and operational costs. As part of Project Brunel, Network Rail sought a digital solution to improve fault response times, enhance data availability, and reduce service disruption without altering the existing safety-critical axle counting system.

To meet these objectives, Network Rail partnered with Frauscher UK & IE team to deploy Frauscher Insights Diagnostics, a secure, cloud-based monitoring solution that extends the diagnostic capabilities of the Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC®. The solution was trialled from August 2023 at London Paddington station before being rolled out across twelve locations along the 13-mile section between Paddington and West Drayton, covering more than 750 wheel sensors installed across multiple relocatable equipment buildings.

Frauscher Insights Diagnostics provides real-time fault notifications, detailed error descriptions, recommended corrective actions, and precise asset location data through a single intuitive interface. Instant alerts ensure maintenance teams are informed without delay, while health and pre-fault monitoring identifies emerging issues before they escalate into failures. Throughout the trial period, user feedback was incorporated into platform enhancements, and close collaboration with Network Rail’s cybersecurity teams enabled nationwide approval and full product acceptance in December 2024.

By enabling faster fault analysis, improved asset awareness, and proactive maintenance, Frauscher Insights Diagnostics has significantly reduced downtime and delay minutes on the Paddington route by up to 80% for major fault events. The solution has also improved collaboration across more than 60 users and supported a shift from reactive fault response to data-driven maintenance, delivering measurable reliability improvements on one of the UK’s most demanding mainline routes.

Proactive Maintenance Capability

Frauscher Insights Diagnostics provides system health and pre-fault monitoring, giving maintainers early warning before issues escalate into failures.

Faster Fault Analysis

When a failure occurs, maintainers now have direct access to asset identity and diagnostic data, helping them rectify failures much more quickly - reducing downtime and delay minutes by up to 80% for major fault events.

Fault and Asset Awareness

Fault investigation and reporting is improved and trends in performance are easy to identify.

Ensuring reliable rail operations across India´s longest rail-road bridge

The Bogibeel Bridge is India’s longest rail-road bridge that connects Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, carrying both rail and road traffic across the Brahmaputra River. Harsh environmental conditions and structural constraints made conventional signalling unworkable. The Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC® axle counting system was selected for its proven reliability and low maintenance under these challenging conditions.

Toronto Transit Commission

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Line 1 Yonge-University is Toronto’s longest subway line, with track circuits utilized for signalling. Due to an increasing number of daily passengers and an aged system the need for upgrading without interfering with the daily operations became readily apparent. It was further required that the new signalling system functions independently of the existing system. It would provide CBTC fallback functionalities, and work as an overlay to the current track circuit-based system.

Wherry Lines

The Wherry Lines are railway branch lines in East Anglia in the East of England, linking Norwich – Great Yarmouth – Lowestoft. The project aimed to integrate Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC into two external systems to mitigate against a train passing a red signal without authority on approach to level crossings.
