Mental Health & Mindfulness at Frauscher – Going beyond "Are you okay?"

Mental health is becoming a central topic at Frauscher, and it should be the core focus for each of us – every day. After all, what is more important than our health and especially mental health? Thanks to numerous initiatives and benefits throughout the year, Frauscher places substantial emphasis on this topic. Together with Ulrike Kitzmüller, Global HR Business Partner at Frauscher, we take a closer look into this and why it is nowadays crucial for companies to prioritize the mental health of employees.

However, what do we mean when we talk about mental health?

Mental health describes how we feel. It includes all emotional and psychological processes that affect our well-being. Not only our physical body gets stressed in everyday life - our head and the psyche also require periods of rest to rejuvenate. While we often cannot ignore physical signs, we frequently expect more from our psyche than we should – in fact, it is not uncommon for physical complaints to be the result of mental exhaustion. So, the crucial question in this context is: What can we do to make sure our employees stay healthy in the long term – both physically and mentally?

How does mental health affect our daily life?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Moreover, it affects how we think, feel, and act in our daily life – both at work and in our private environment. Every person resorts, sometimes unconsciously, to measures that can always improve well-being and mental health. Some people perceive socializing with close friends as very beneficial to their mental health, while others prefer to do physical activities or seek professional help. “Whatever it is – we should all keep in mind that mental health should not be overlooked and that we should pay as much attention to it as we do to our physical well-being. There are many reasons to hold regular well-being events, that do not just help teams get on a bit better, but help our teams and leaders stay emotionally well and physically healthy”, explains Ulrike.

Benefits of mental health include, but aren’t limited to

  • Reduced risk of depression
  • Reduction in anxiety
  • Improved moods
  • Clearer thinking
  • A greater sense of calm or inner peace
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improvements in relationships

What can we at Frauscher do to improve the mental health of our employees?

All those benefits mentioned above help us live a healthier and better life, both privately and professionally. There are numerous activities which can help each and every one of us to improve our own mental health. Going for a run, chatting with friends, or establishing relaxing routines in our life – we are all responsible for maintaining our mental health. “However, we at Frauscher are convinced that as an employer, we must create healthy and comforting working environments for our employees. Our employees are our biggest asset, and we are convinced that by supporting them with diverse initiatives over the year, employees place a focus on improving their well-being and get an idea of how to improve emotional resilience and create a more balanced work life”, continues Ulrike. To raise the awareness regarding mental health among all employees a keynote speech with Maike van den Boom, consultant, and mentor on the topic of happiness and leadership, has been organised at our first Mental Health Awareness Day this year, with the aim to tackle topics such as the importance of trust and support when it comes to mental health within an organisation. For the second Mental Health Awareness Day, Eva Gruber, a renowned Mental Fitness and Habit Expert, delivered a keynote on the topic of mental strength and how to use our inner power.

Enough with words, what really counts are actions

At Frauscher, we know that only concrete initiatives can lead to real change. Among all our different locations globally, different projects have commenced, which encourage all employees to participate in numerous activities around the three pillars: body, mind, and nutrition to create a pleasant ambience outside the office space together with the colleagues. From sports activities to coaching sessions, meditation, and cooking courses – all kinds of activities are organised among colleagues from different departments to achieve a healthy balance between work and leisure time. Since movement stimulates our senses and clears our heads, the Frauscher colleagues organise walks in the nature where everyone can talk about mental health and what each of us can contribute to it.

Employee assistance programmes as anonymous contact points for all kinds of professional or private issues, have been made available for our Frauscher employees in different locations and can be used for personal counselling anytime, free of charge to find solutions together with psychological experts. Besides the global initiatives, our different locations organise numerous other activities: Our US team is participating in charity events, family days are organised among our Indian colleagues and a dedicated Wellbeing Week offered the Frauscher UK employees the opportunity to have health checks on site - just to mention a few examples. This year, Frauscher had dedicated two days to the topic of mental health so that employees get the chance to focus on their own well-being. Employees could spend time with their loved ones, travel, meditate or do anything which helped them feel relaxed and rejuvenated. However, together with our other numerous benefits which are offered to our employees, this is only the start and “we continuously think of new initiatives which can improve the mental health of our colleagues at Frauscher”, concludes Ulrike.
